Why This Matters
The disproportionately high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity among Black women in Georgia and beyond highlight a deep-rooted issue of racial disparities in healthcare, raising critical concerns about equity, access to quality care, and societal impact. Addressing these disparities is crucial not only to ensure the health and well-being of Black mothers but also to promote justice, human rights, and overall public health outcomes for all communities. This issue underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions, policy changes, and systemic reform to eliminate racial inequities in maternal healthcare and create a more just and equitable society for generations to come. Stories and images of impacted individuals are pivotal in guiding these necessary processes.

Dear Beloved Community,
I come to you today as Shawana S. Moore, a Black woman who has journeyed through the depths of a traumatic birthing experience but emerged on the other side with a burning determination to weave our stories into a tapestry of resilience and hope. My own survival serves as a testament to the fierce strength that courses through the veins of Black mothers, a strength too often overshadowed by the shadows of systemic inequities.
It is with a heart brimming with passion and purpose that I embark on a project that seeks to illuminate the birthing experiences of Black women in Georgia. Through the transformative power of art, I aim to capture the raw emotions, the unspoken challenges, and the unwavering courage that define our journeys into motherhood.
In a world where our voices are often muted and our struggles dismissed, this project is a beacon of light, a platform for our stories to be heard, seen, and felt. Each brushstroke will be a tribute to the resilience of Black women, a testament to our unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.
I believe that by sharing our experiences, by painting portraits that encapsulate the depth of our emotions, we can spark conversations, ignite change, and pave the way for a future where Black mothers are truly seen, valued, and supported.
Join me on this transformative journey as we weave a tapestry of empowerment, one story, one portrait at a time. Together, let us paint a brighter, more equitable future for Black maternal health.
With heartfelt gratitude and unwavering determination,
Shawana S. Moore
